Companies to
Classrooms
is a non-profit organization that supports students and
teachers by providing educational supplies free of charge
through the operation of a store staffed by volunteers and
stocked with recycled or excess supplies and inventories
donated by local businesses. We are a 501(c)3 organization
and therefore, all donations to Companies to
Classrooms are tax-deductible as provided by law.
Currently we
support public schools in Bloomington and Richfield,
Minnesota with plans to expand to other suburban school
districts in the Minneapolis/St. Paul metro area as funding
allows. We run our operations through financial donations
from businesses and individuals and grants from corporate
and private foundations.
Free-and-reduced-lunch students struggle to acquire even
basic supplies that are necessary for learning. Typically
the concentration of these students is thought to be in the
inner city but as shown in the Bloomington Sun Current on
March 15, 2007, suburban poverty is an increasing reality.
As school budgets are becoming tighter, teachers in our
public schools try to fill in the gaps out of their own
pockets. On average, teachers spend $700-1000 or more of
their own money to help students with supplies and to
supplement their own classrooms needs.
On the other
hand, companies constantly need to dispose of excess
supplies and inventories due to changes in an
ever-increasing competitive business environment. These
materials, although usable, are no longer of use to them and
it is simply not cost efficient to locate a secondary user.
Therefore, thousands of tons of reusable items end up in
landfills year after year. When given a viable option,
businesses are very willing to support education by
recycling excess product through Companies to
Classrooms.
Companies to
Classrooms
is a WIN-WIN solution for any community:
1.
Free-and-reduced-lunch students are equipped with school
supplies at no cost to them, the teacher or the school.
2.
Additional supplies are made available to our public schools
without increasing taxes or educational funding.
3. Local
businesses have an easy way to support education in their
community by recycling their reusable waste.
4. Tons of
reusable materials are kept out of our landfills.
